Aye Yo Pass the Remote by Henry Backus

Henry Backus is an undergraduate student at Boston University studying biology and genetics. He grew up in Portland, Oregon, where he filled the margins of his high school notebook with preoccupations of his wandering imagination. Backus eventually invested in a sketchbook where he collected hundreds of half-finished sketches. He later began following French illustrator Moebius by watching him draw off-the-cuff scenes as a collection of his sporadic imagination. Backus subscribes to the ideology of entering an artwork without intention: let the imagination drive you. His drawings are a result of his gallivant subconscious mind.

Aye Yo Pass the Remote is a Frankenstein of Backus’ sketches. His collection of drawings is the genesis of his work, in which he takes inspiration to create an organic formation infused with a breath of life. His unique process resulted in a surrealist painting with motifs of mass media and transportation. Media globalization has birthed a never-ending stream of fuzing ideas analogous to Backus’ process of artistic creation.
